It's one of the most common questions we get from homeowners thinking about solar. The short answer is: not always, but often enough that it's worth checking before you commit.
Your solar system connects into your switchboard, so the board has to be in good condition, have enough room, and have the right safety protection before solar can be added. Here's what we look for, and how to tell if your home might need an upgrade.
Why your switchboard matters for solar
Your switchboard is the hub of your home's electrical system. When solar is installed, the inverter connects into it through its own dedicated circuit and isolation switch. That means the board needs:
- Physical space for the new solar circuit breaker and main switch
- Modern protection, including safety switches (RCDs) that protect people from electric shock
- Good overall condition, with no damage, overheating or outdated components
If any of these are missing, the solar can't be connected safely until the board is brought up to standard.
Signs your switchboard may need an upgrade
You might need an upgrade if your switchboard has:
- Old ceramic (rewireable) fuses instead of circuit breakers
- Safety switches missing from some or all circuits
- No spare room for extra circuit breakers
- Scorch marks, buzzing, a burning smell, or breakers that trip often
- An old backing board that may contain asbestos, which is common in older homes and needs to be handled safely and correctly
As a rule of thumb, if your home was built more than 25–30 years ago and the switchboard has never been touched, there's a good chance it will need some work.
What if my switchboard is in good shape?
Plenty of newer homes already have a modern board with safety switches and spare space. In that case, adding solar may only need a new solar circuit breaker, an isolation switch and the correct labelling, with no full upgrade required.
We'll always tell you straight. If your board doesn't need replacing, we won't recommend it.
Thinking about a battery or EV charger later?
If a home battery or an electric vehicle is on the cards in the next few years, it's worth mentioning before your solar goes in. Both add load and need their own circuits, so planning for them now can mean:
- Choosing an inverter that can take a battery later
- Making sure your switchboard has room for future circuits
- Avoiding paying for a second round of switchboard work down the track
How we check your switchboard
The easiest way to find out is to send us a couple of photos of your switchboard with your quote request. That often gives us a good idea of what's involved before we even arrive.
During the onsite assessment, we'll check the board properly, explain what we find in plain language, and include any switchboard work clearly in your quote, so there are no surprises.
The bottom line
A switchboard upgrade isn't always needed before installing solar, but it's one of the first things we check. Getting it right keeps your home safe, makes sure your solar can be connected without delays, and sets you up for a battery or EV charger in the future.
