Electrical fault finding & repairs

A safety switch that keeps tripping or a circuit that's gone dead always has a cause. The aim is to find it and fix it properly, rather than just getting the power back on.

Common faults

  • Safety switch (RCD) that keeps tripping
  • Power out to part of the house
  • Lights flickering or dimming
  • Power points or switches that are warm, loose or not working
  • Outdoor circuits affected by water or damage
  • Appliances tripping the power when switched on

If you see smoke, sparking or fire, get everyone clear and call 000. Only turn off the main switch if it's safe to reach.

How we approach it

We'll ask what's been happening, test the circuits to narrow down the cause, then repair or replace what's at fault. Before we leave, we'll explain what we found and whether there's anything else worth keeping an eye on. If a fault points to a bigger problem, like an old switchboard, we'll tell you straight and leave the decision with you.

Common questions

My safety switch keeps tripping. Is that dangerous?

A safety switch trips because it has detected a problem, so it's doing its job. Don't keep resetting it if it trips straight away. Unplug appliances on that circuit and get it checked.

Can you tell me what the problem is over the phone?

We can often give you an idea of the likely cause and how urgent it is, but finding the actual fault means testing on site.
