Switchboard upgrades

Your switchboard protects every circuit in your home. Older boards with ceramic fuses or limited safety switches weren't built for the way we use power now, and they often don't have room for solar, a battery or an EV charger.

A recent switchboard upgrade: old ceramic fuses replaced with a new board and safety switches.

Signs your switchboard may need an upgrade

  • Old ceramic (rewireable) fuses instead of circuit breakers
  • Safety switches (RCDs) missing from some or all circuits
  • Breakers tripping often, or fuses that keep blowing
  • Scorch marks, buzzing or a burning smell near the board
  • No room to add solar, a battery, an EV charger or new circuits
  • An asbestos-backed or deteriorating enclosure (assessed on site)

What an upgrade involves

We'll look at your existing board, the circuits it supplies and what you're planning to add, then explain what's needed and why. The new board is fitted with modern protection, each circuit is clearly labelled and tested, and you'll get a Certificate of Electrical Safety on completion. If your meter or main supply also needs work, we'll explain what's involved before anything starts.

Common questions

Will my power be off?

Yes, the power needs to be off for part of the changeover. We'll tell you how long when we quote, so you can plan around it.

Do I need an upgrade for solar or an EV charger?

Not always. It depends on your existing board and how much spare capacity it has. We'll check it and give you a straight answer.

Can you just add a safety switch?

Sometimes, yes. If the board is in good condition and there's room, adding protection can be an option. If it isn't, we'll explain why an upgrade makes more sense.

Got an electrical, solar or battery job coming up?

Whether you're a homeowner with something that needs sorting, or a builder or solar company looking for a reliable electrician, we'd be glad to hear about it. Give us a call or send through a quote request, and we'll get back to you to talk it through.
